Smart City Expo World Congress: Impressions from the show

Anders Grafström, Linda Magnertoft and Andrea Sorri at Smart City Expo World Congress.

Smart City Expo World Congress 2024 is behind us, and what an edition it was! With 25,700 visitors and 1,150 exhibitors it was the biggest edition so far, confirming itself as the world’s most influential event for cities and urban innovation. Leaders from global governments and organizations gathered to help guide cities towards a better future.

Once again, Axis attended as a Global Partner to highlight the strategic importance that this segment has for the growth of our company.

During the exhibition, we showcased how our video and IoT solutions can answer the question that the show organizers asked this year: what is the magic formula for the cities of tomorrow?

We answered in different ways:

  • We can do more with less: we can collect and analyze data from different sources, such as surveillance cameras, sensors, and IoT devices to improve insight granularity.
  • We can connect the real and the virtual world: we use cameras to get urban sensory data about conditions and activities from street level.
  • We leverage AI with an ethical approach to identify patterns and predict trends, applying what-if models to plan future strategies.
  • We put environmentally friendly and adaptable solutions first, to ensure long-term viability and address sustainability, efficient mobility, safety and security.

One thing we know well is that we can’t answer the organizer’s question by ourselves. An ecosystem of trusted partners is how Axis approach the challenges that cities are and will be facing, which is why we shared our booth in the exhibition with eight technology partners.

Genetec joined us to and shared the paramount importance that data have in making cities safe:

Respecting the environment is a key component of creating and making cities more livable. Power efficiency then becomes key to ensure resources are maximized and it’s for this reason that we invited our partner Townet for the first time. They presented SmartBox, a solution to power and control surveillance devices as well as wireless telecom devices.

More relevant than ever is the possibility to monitor environmental events, which is where our partner Vaisala comes into play. By integrating their weather and air quality sensors with video from Axis cameras, they’re able to keep an eye on metrics such as pollution or water levels and link them to video feeds to give richer insights to city officials

Feeling safe and secure should always be considered a given, especially during nighttime, which is why street lighting takes center stage. Our partner WE-EF showed us how digitalization is impacting this market as well. By integrating camera technology into lighting fixtures, we can turn light fixtures into much more than just means to create the right ambience.

To wrap everything up we discussed with Ugo Valenti, Business Unit Director at Fira Barcelona about how the event went.
