Close-up of an eye, visualizing AVIF format

Axis Communications introduces support for AVIF (AV1 Image File Format) — a modern snapshot format that delivers higher-quality still images with significantly improved compression efficiency compared to traditional JPEG format. Available in upcoming AXIS OS 12.11 for ARTPEC-9 devices, AVIF support enhances image capturing across standalone and edge-based deployments.

Snapshots are widely used across surveillance systems — for event notifications, forensic exports, and time laps.  AVIF is also integrated into action rules via WebGUI, enabling administrators to select AVIF as the image format for uploads and event-based notifications. Until now, JPEG has been the standard format for still images. While widely supported, JPEG compression can result in visible artifacts and reduced details, especially at higher compression levels.

  • Smaller file sizes
  • Better preservation of fine details
  • Support for higher-resolution images
  • Improved storage and bandwidth efficiency

The result is clearer snapshots without increasing storage requirements.

Because AVIF relies on AV1 hardware support, the feature is available for devices powered by ARTPEC-9 and later platforms.

The introduction of AVIF marks another step towards more efficient, higher-quality edge-based imaging.

By expanding AV1 capabilities from video streams to still images, Axis continues to optimize the entire media pipeline — from live video and recordings to snapshots and event-driven image capturing.
