Axis Communications kicks off Season 4 of the “Connect” podcast with a meaningful sendoff for a familiar voice.
In the season four premiere of the “Connect” podcast, Mic Drop – How Security Became the Mission, James Marcella sits down with his former co-host and industry veteran Scott Dunn one final time. The two reflect on Scott’s 30-plus-year career while celebrating his transition into semi-retirement.
During his illustrious tenure with Axis Communications, Scott has both witnessed and helped shape the evolving security landscape. In this episode, he shares insights on how the industry has transformed and where it’s heading next. The two specifically dive into the role of artificial intelligence, with Scott offering a grounded perspective on its current capabilities and future potential:
What people see [of AI] in movies isn't necessarily what it is today. I think AI today is very good at doing certain things…[repetitive tasks and mathematical equations]. I find it’s useful for scanning and summarizing [documents]. Obviously, it’s making progress toward being what people hope it might be, but it’s not there yet. I think machine learning is good, [and it’s gotten] much better. But machines thinking on their own, I think we’re still a little ways away from that.
Scott also reflects on the lessons he’s learned throughout his career, offering key advice for those entering the field:
One of the most valuable lessons I could impart [is to] take initiative. I don't care what your job is, take initiative. If you think there's a better way of doing something, then get at it. Don't wait for permission, don't let that slow you down. Take initiative and make the change happen. And that goes with innovation. You can innovate your job, you can innovate communications. You can innovate the way you do things. It doesn't have to be just technology.
Pairing Scott’s personal reflections with industry insight, the Season 4 premiere of “Connect” offers a look back at an influential career and a forward-looking conversation about the future of security.
