Axis Communications Celebrates 40 Years of Enabling a Smarter, Safer World

4 minutes read

Network video technology pioneer credits enduring success to the “Axis Advantage”

Established in 1984, Axis Communications—a pioneer in IoT, cloud and AI in video surveillance—is celebrating its 40th anniversary. Over the past four decades, Axis has introduced ground-breaking innovations beginning with the world's first network camera in 1996, which spawned an industry and triggered the shift from analog to IP-based video surveillance. Since then, Axis has launched many other “world’s firsts” including the first network video System-on-Chip (the Axis Real Time Picture Encoding Chip, ARTPEC); the first video analytics in a camera (the AXIS 2120); Axis Lightfinder light-optimizing technology and Axis Zipstream video compression technology; as well as the AXIS Camera Application Platform (ACAP) open application edge development platform. With a global presence in more than 50 countries, Axis continues to evolve as an organization, expand its solutions portfolio and reach new industries and markets—remaining the global leader in video surveillance.

“At Axis, we are devoted to maintaining a long-term vision and innovating technologies every day that contribute to a smarter, safer world. In tandem with our 40th anniversary, and fundamental to our continued success, we acknowledge a unique set of benefits we provide to our customers and partners—who help us bring our vision to life,” said Fredrik Nilsson, vice president, Americas, Axis Communications. “This collection of benefits, combined together, is known as the ‘Axis Advantage.’

Highlights of the “Axis Advantage” and what Axis plans to deliver around them in the coming year:

  • A partner ecosystem built on value and long-term relationships. Axis maintains over 24,000 active partners globally—including distributors, system integrators, resellers, technology partners, and architect and engineering consultants—whose collaboration contributes to ongoing innovation and the enhancement of Axis products, solutions and services.
  • Places to see, feel, hear, and touch the latest technologies. Axis Experience Centers (AECs), offer in-person consultation and hands-on experience with Axis solutions, and Axis partner solutions. With 32 Axis Experience Centers globally—16 across the Americas—plus one roaming Axis Experience Vehicle, these centers host tens of thousands of visitors every year. AECs are open to all partners and customers, and Axis plans to reach more of them by expanding its AEC network.
  • The premier source of education, training, and certifications. Axis Communications Academy is recognized as the industry’s preeminent training program and its Axis Certified Professional (ACP) credential is a highly valued certification. With dozens of dedicated trainers, a constantly evolving curriculum and a variety of learning formats—in-person, virtual and elearning—Axis Communications Academy students across the globe completed nearly 33,500 courses in 2023. Axis aims to keep these professionals, and its Academy curriculum, on the cutting edge.
  • Widest array of network video and audio analytics on the market. In addition to its own extensive analytics offering, Axis has over 250 global application development partners specializing in video analytics. Through its open application platform and its AXIS Object Analytics suite of AI-based analytics, Axis continues to advance the development of powerful edge-based analytics—ultimately providing customers with actionable insights that improve security and enhance business.
  • Open platforms that welcome innovation. A cornerstone of the Axis philosophy is to provide open technology solutions that promote collaboration and innovation. Accordingly, Axis has:
    • Introduced the most popular API—VAPIX—over 25 years ago, which is used by thousands of developers.
    • Released the fourth generation of its AXIS Camera Application Platform (ACAP) in order to boost opportunities for developers to advance AI-powered, edge-based analytics.
    • Earlier in 2024, Axis launched Axis Cloud Connect, the industry’s first open, cybersecure, and channel-friendly cloud platform that enables Axis and its partners to build cloud-based solutions and services.
  • Technical support with a human touch.  Axis staffs about 150 full-time, in-house technical support specialists globally, with nearly half of these professionals in the Americas. These dedicated, highly trained experts provide personal attention to each and every customer—staying with them all the way until their issue is resolved. With an average answer time of less than a minute, customers can be assured that their needs are always met in a timely manner.
